4.75 stars!!the cover was inspiring; the book even more so.
Bird is a book that is about a girl named Jewel whose brother, named John but nicknamed Bird, believed he could fly and jumped off a cliff when he was 5 and died on the same day that Jewel was born. her family has been sad ever since, especially her grandpa. when Jewel meets a black boy who calls himself John and becomes friends with him, the entire family dislikes the "coinidence" except for the mom. they visit the cliff where Bird jumped often. Jewel has made a circle of stones there, one for each of her birthdays.
When John's name is revealed to not be John at all, Jewel is angry at being tricked like that and has a big fight with John. She says some really hurtful things to him, and they don't talk for a while. then, when someone finds the circle of stones at the cliff and reports to the mayor, Jewel's mother loses her job working for the mayor. The family begins falling apart, with mom and dad fighting constantly while Jewel and her grandpa discover new things about each other.
However, Jewel feels bad about what she said to John/Eugene and they apologize to each other and become friends again.
Also, she and Grandpa become very close and grandpa finally starts opening up a little.
When she explains the situation to her mother and father, they accept it and everyone winds up okay.
I think the story at first was like a puzzle that had just been ripped apart. Throughout the story, the pieces began fitting into one another and at the end, the whole thing was one big glorious picture.
