interesting. very interesting, i must say. presents a new way of looking at things.
deprived of feelings, memory, and the basic foundations of life as we are accustomed to, Jonas lives in a world that "perfect", governed by rules that the elders make and a lifestyle of undying monotony. Everyday, everyone takes an injection in the morning to prevent them from having emotions throughout the day and forget the previous day's emotions.
when Jonas turns twelve, he and all the other twelve year olds are assigned jobs, positions, roles in the community. when he is skipped, Jonas feels out of place as every single other child is assigned to their positions but he. at last, when he is the only one left, the chief elder that runs the community tells him that he has been selected for receiving memories, a great honor.
once he begins his training, Jonas's world is cracked open like an egg.
he discovers music, color, the people of the world, the wonders of the earth, and is exhilarated. he discovers true emotions and, once he finds out what his daily injections do to him, stops taking them.
but with these splendors come a price- the outside world was not only fun and games. he soon experienced war, poverty, starvation, plague, and most of all, loss. he is not sure that he wants the world to be returned again.
but he does return it, after watching his father murder a baby. taking another baby with him, since he knows that the baby will be killed because it didn't pass its maturity tests. he leaves the community and leaves the edge of his world into another, traveling tirelessly with nothing but an old map to guide him, given by the giver(pun not intended) to reach the boundary of memories, which when passed through by someone truly worthy of being a receiver, would release the memories and sensations of the past into the world again.
Jonas, of course, passes the boundary.
